Teaching

The undergraduate medical course at Monash University is currently going through a transition phase from the old to the new curriculum.

2005 represents the final Year 6 of the old undergraduate curriculum. Surgical selectives (student internships) are offered by the majority of surgical units at each of the Southern Clinical School hospitals.

  • Undergraduate - New Curriculum

The new undergraduate curriculum has been phased in as follows:
    2002 Year 1
    2003 Years 1 & 2
    2004 Years 1, 2 & 3
    2005 Years 1, 2, 3 & 4
    2006 Complete Course

Year 3 - Integrated Medicine and Surgery teaching at all Southern Clinical School sites. Active surgical involvement occurs in problem-based learning (patient and paper based) clinical skills teaching and theme based teaching.

(Year 5 - Planning is well underway for the first cohort of Year 5 students in 2006.) The first half of the year focuses on HMO/Basic Surgical Trainee education. Each unit presents on common conditions, procedures and post-operative complications encountered in that speciality. An introduction to possible research projects available within that unit is also provided.
The second half of the year is devoted to surgical audit and the presentation of topics of interest by each Southern Health surgical unit

  • Postgraduate

The University Department is the focus for postgraduate surgical training with surgical teaching, skills training and regular audit meetings.

  • The Marshall Prize in Surgical Training

Established in 2002, the Marshall Prize in Surgical Training is to encourage surgical trainees within Southern Health to pursue basic or clinical investigative projects. The prize recognizes the contribution of the Marshall brothers Robert, Vernon and Donald to surgical training at Prince Henry's Hospital and Monash Medical Centre. A symposium based on submitted abstracts is conducted in mid-December each year.

  • Skills Laboratory

A basic and advanced skills laboratory has been recently established in the Department to cater for both undergraduates and postgraduate surgical trainees. To date particular emphasis has been placed upon basic surgical principles, laparoscopic surgery and orthopaedic surgery. It is planned to broaden the scope of the facility in the near future.

  • Frankston Hospital Registrar Research Prize and Tyco Award

The Frankston Hospital Registrar Prize and Tyco Award will be awarded for the best research project submitted. A symposium is conducted in late November each year.

  • Professorial Surgical Rounds

These hour long meetings are held on a weekly basis ( Wednesday's at 5.30pm) with presentations from all surgical units within Southern Health as well as from a broad range of guest speakers.
