Health is more than just extra hospital beds

All Together Better Health 5 Conference, Manly
held in April


Monash Department of Rural and Indigenous Health (MUDRIH) played a major role in developing collaborative health teams at the ‘All Together Better Health 5’ conference in Sydney.

The conference was committed to improving patient care through team collaboration.

Co- Conveyor of the conference, Associate Professor Janice Chesters, Acting Director at MUDRIH, commented that she was pleased to see the conference drew leading health professionals from all over the world.

Janice pointed out that the conference theme was ‘Seeing things differently’ and added that this applied to student and health professional teamwork.

Associate Professor Marlene Drysdale presented the Australian Indigenous Keynote address at the conference: Connecting the network: Cultural Competence for Health Practitioners.

Marlene, head of the Indigenous Health Unit at MUDRIH, pointed out that the challenge for health professionals is to develop strong culturally and clinically competent teams to deliver health care for all their patients that is safe and secure.

Mollie Burley presented a number of papers, posters and workshops. Mollie, a senior lecturer, helps keep professionals in touch with each other across rural Victoria by supporting local interprofessional learning hubs through the Health & Social Care Interprofessional Network (HSIN) and the Vic News newsletter. Mollie is also a member of international networks. Mollie explained how exciting it was for many international members to meet face to face for the first time.

Kerryn Morgan and Fiona Mc Cook also presented the “Train the Trainer” model for health professionals which they have developed. An additional workshop was co-presented by A/Prof Janice Chesters. An additional three posters were also presented at the conference with contributions variously by Mollie Burley, Fiona Mc Cook, Kerryn Morgan, Mel Hibbins, Clare Mc Hugh and Jane Taylor.
