Doctor of Philosophy

The School of Psychology Psychiatry and Psychological Medicine consists of two disciplines, Psychology and Psychological Medicine. The School offers the research degree of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in both disciplines.

Research in the School

The School provides a vibrant research environment for more than 200 academic staff, 150 doctoral students and more than 100 fourth year students. Research expertise extends from investigations of molecular and cellular determinants of behaviour through to studies of clinical psychology and higher cognitive functions.
Most of the research undertaken in the School is characterised by a strong social or clinical relevance. The success of this approach is illustrated by the growing number of research centres that are now affiliated with the School. These include:

PhD Entry requirements

The minimum qualification for admission to PhD candidature is a bachelors degree with honours I or honours IIA. Applicants must be able to demonstrate a capacity to carry out independent research and have adequate training and ability to pursue the proposed course of study. Adequate supervision facilities must be available for the duration of candidature.

Supervision

A candidate's principal supervisor must be a member of School's academic staff who has an appropriate research interest and a continuing active involvement in research.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to discuss their research proposal with potential supervisors prior to submitting an application form for admission. Full list of staff and their research interests.

Probationary Candidature

Candidates must undertake the first 12 months of full-time study or equivalent as a probationary candidate.

Literature Review

Candidates must submit a 10,000 word, critical review of relevant literature after approximately twelve months of full-time candidature. This will be formally assessed as satisfactory/unsatisfactory. A satisfactory assessment will be required to proceed to the second year of candidature.

Graduate Seminar Program

Candidates are required to participate and perform satisfactorily in the Graduate Seminar Program. This comprises a series of seminars given by candidates to an audience of their peers and academic staff in the school. Each candidate will present seminars during their candidature covering research background and design, research progress and an account of completed research. A satisfactory seminar presentation will be required to proceed to the second year of candidature.

Extra Curricula Activities

Students are encouraged to complete relevant extra-curricular activities. Monash Research Graduate School organises workshops and seminars on a wide range of topics under their exPERT programs.
Monash Postgraduate Association also organises workshops and seminars.

Scholarships

Monash University offers a range of scholarships to candidates undertaking a PhD. These scholarships are keenly competitive. Applicants with a first-class honours degree or equivalent, and those completing honours this year with results pending, are strongly encouraged to apply.

How to Apply

Prospective applicants must discuss their research proposal with a potential supervisor and then should complete an Application for Admission form.
