There has been recent evidence to show some measure of protection to breast cancer in women using Metformin. This drug is a commonly used medication in the treatment of type 2 diabetes.
Women who participate will have a visit with our study team at the Austin Hospital approximately 6 weeks prior to their planned surgery. Participants will be randomly allocated to take either Metformin or no treatment for the period prior to their surgery.
During the breast reduction surgery blood and a sample of the breast tissue will be sent away for specific analysis for our study.
Patient recruitment for this study will be via plastic surgeon, Mr Hamish Farrow and the Austin Hospital.
