Doing it tough: Older men from CALD backgrounds

A forum was held in Shepparton to report back some preliminary study findings to service providers in the region. The study is seeking to investigate the issues faced by ageing men from CALD communities in rural Australia in relation to their physical and mental health and wellbeing. Practicing Positive Partnerships Report Launch

The Practising Positive Partnerships (PPP) project is a collaborative multi-stage project which seeks to deepen understanding of the nature of inter-organisational partnerships within the ethnic and multicultural community aged care sector. This work is important in the light of anecdotal evidence that suggests organisations within the Sector are missing out on partnership opportunities, which in turn may be detrimentally impacting the health of, and access to services for, older people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds.

On 26 August 2010, we launched a report documenting the first stage of the PPP project. This initial stage consisted of a pilot study to explore the experiences of partnerships within the Sector. Integral to the project is the dissemination and translation of the pilot study findings to various key stakeholders, which forms the next stage of the project. This will be achieved through community forums, workshops, debriefings and discussions. This engagement with stakeholders will inform the development of a future collaborative work plan, which may include the development of practice guidelines or extending the empirical data collection to other geographic regions.

The Department of Health and Ageing has recently launched physical activity recommendations for older people. These were produced by Dr Jane Sims, in association with colleagues at the National Ageing Research Institute.

ERA Exchange program

The ARC/NHMRC Research Network in Ageing Well has provided funding for two national (up to $5,000 each) and one international (up to $10,000) exchange for PhD students who are currently enrolled at an Australian university and whose research is strongly focused on issues to do with human ageing.  Applications are to be made online by the 27th February 2009.  Please click here for further details.  Please note that before applying for the funding, you need to have made provisional arrangements for your exchange with the host institution and host supervisor/s.
