Our responsibility to our students

Looking after the emotional wellbeing of our future health leaders

The years at university bring tough moments, and it’s the job of Jacqui Tonks to help students from the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences to overcome the personal challenges that may jeopardise their studies.

As Manager, Student Life, she and her team look after the day-to-day pastoral care of students, helping them through pressures such as family problems, grief and mental illness when they start to impact seriously on their wellbeing.

“Students with severe personal issues that end up affecting their studies can come and seek advice on the best member of staff to speak to, the best university service to access, and the best external service to access – for example Beyond Blue or the Victorian Doctor’s Health Program.”

Jacqui’s team are also involved with other initiatives, such as assisting with the film Different Paths Leading to the Same Place, which was recently shot here on campus.

After 14 years at Monash and nine years in student services, Jacqui finds her job increasingly rewarding.

“I think there’s a sense of satisfaction when you have a student who has previously struggled with some really significant stuff outside of the uni, who’s managed to get through their studies and graduate out the other side,” she says.

“I recently went to a graduation dinner, and saw the students who were previously at the point where they were considering stopping studying, and we were able to counsel them on what their options were. And with some hard work on their part you see them come out the other side, and that’s really lovely.”

Our help to students during tough times

We respond to urgent student needs, such as those that arose from the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009.

We provided text books to students who suffered property damage as a result of the fires, and also ensured that pastoral care was available to any students who needed it.

This is just one example of our responsiveness in times of crisis.

Our scholarships

As well as offering scholarships to students purely on the basis of academic merit, numerous scholarships – such as the Dr Gilbert M Davis Award and the Victorian Ambulance Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) Scholarships – are available to new and continuing students in the Faculty who experience financial need.

These scholarships recognise the importance of supporting our brightest students and assisting them to enter the workforce.

The Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences Scholars Bursary helps promising young people who are experiencing financial and personal adversity. The bursaries are available for both local and international students, and are the focus of a fundraising drive that aims to build a $4 million endowment.

The bursary assists students with costs including books, living expenses and -- in the case of international students -- tuition costs. The money also furnishes emergency funds for students experiencing hardship.

The students are from all walks of life – local, international, rural and from remote Indigenous communities. Faculty staff were invited to support the bursary in April last year through the University’s first staff philanthropy campaign, and in June, the Chancellor invited his fellow Monash alumni in Australia to donate to student support initiatives in each faculty.

Reports from students
who had scholarships from our committee in 2010

  • Pamela Dinsmore
In 2010 I was in my fourth and final year of a Bachelor of Nursing at Monash Gippsland. I registered first as a Division2 nurse over 20 years earlier and returned to study as a mature age single parent.

Earlier this year I was offered the unique opportunity to travel to Samoa for my six-week medical elective. My journey would not have been possible without the generous MBBS Equity Travel Bursary offered by Monash University.

Our Student Academic Support Unit

The Student Academic Support Unit (SASU) provides teaching and support programs on campus and in clinical settings to help undergraduate students develop professional communication skills and academic skills that they will need in pursuing their study and training.

SASU's classes include academic writing, clinical communication skills, communication for assessment tasks such as OSCEs and case presentations, as well as organisational and study skills.

SASU advisors are also available for individual consultation on academic issues, and may also refer students for assistance in coping with challenges in their personal lives, if this is a contributing factor to their academic problems.

Faculty grants for non-course academic activities

Students in the faculty can apply through student services for funding to assist them in pursuing activities of an academic nature.

These activities, such as attending and presenting at conferences or seminars, are not part of the core curriculum, but are an important part of learning and development. The funding can assist with the cost of registration at conferences, travel, and other aspects of such activity.

Grants for non-course related activities are usually between $250 and $1,000 depending on the nature and benefit of the work program or conference the student will attend. They are offered in two rounds: April and September. For more information, visit www.med.monash.edu.au/current/faculty-sponsorship-for-non-course-academic-activities.html.

Our support for students with a disability

We encourage disabled students to register with the University’s Disability Liaison Unit, which assists students with disabilities or long-term medical conditions to participate as independently as possible in academic activities. Visit the website for more information and to get in touch:
