How do I get into the Bachelor of Physiotherapy?
Entry into the Bachelor of Physiotherapy program is highly competitive and the process of entry includes multiple criteria.
The first part of the entry process is the UMAT (Undergraduate Medicine and Health Sciences Admission Test). Applicants are shortlisted for interview based on their performance in this test..
The UMAT is held once a year only, usually around mid year. The date and further information for the UMAT can be found at http://umatweb.acer.edu.au/. Results from the UMAT are valid for 1 year.
Successful shortlisted applicants are then invited to attend a face to face interview held at the Peninsula campus at the end of November, early December. If you are unable to attend an interview in person you will not be considered for entry into the Physiotherapy course.
Selection for admission into the Bachelor of Physiotherapy considers an applicant’s performance in the UMAT, interview and ATAR (or your GPA if you are a student who is currently studying or previously studied, at a tertiary institution).
For further information about the application process, please see http://www.monash.edu.au/study/coursefinder/course/3868/
I am currently overseas or interstate. Can I complete my interview for Physiotherapy via phone or Skype?
All local applicants (year 12 or non-year 12) if invited, must attend an interview in person. There is no option for phone or Skype interviews for local applicants.
Is there a set number of non-year 12 applications you can accept each year?
There are no set places for year 12 or non-year 12 applicants. Selection is based on each applicant’s overall achievements.
Are there any extra requirements for Physiotherapy?
YES. Prospective students should be aware of the following requirements:
Background Checks
A satisfactory police check and working with children check is required for each student.
Please refer the Faculty website for additional information on the police check and working with children check.
Health Requirements
Students will be required to comply with the Faculty Immunisation and Infection Risk Policy and recommendations and procedures, to enable them to proceed through the course with an acceptably low level of risk.
All students must accept responsibility for having up-to-date immunisations before commencing the course. Recommended immunisations will include diphtheria, tetanus, polio, measles, mumps, rubella, and hepatitis B.
Prospective students will be provided with detailed written information and, as appropriate, counseling about the effect that HIV or hepatitis B infection may have on the ability of health care workers to practice their profession.
Monash University is required to inform placement organisations of the immunisation status of all students. If a student does not satisfy the placement organisation's immunisation requirements, it may refuse to accept the student for a placement.
A student who is unable to complete all compulsory placements cannot meet the requirements for successful completion of the Bachelor of Physiotherapy.
Additional Information
Prospective students are advised that there may be additional costs associated with the course for text books and course support material, uniforms for clinical attachments, travel, accommodation and living costs associated with rural clinical attachments, a police check and precautionary measures such as immunisations which are required prior to the commencing the course.
I have not completed the pre-requisite studies listed for entry into the Bachelor of Physiotherapy degree. What does this mean for me as a non-year 12 applicant?
All students must have the pre-requisites or equivalent University studies even if you are a non-year 12 applicant. Successful completion of two semesters of tertiary studies in the pre-requisite VCE subjects at a recognised tertiary institution would be considered comparable to VCE success in those subjects.
Please contact your local TAFE to see if they offer courses in the Year 12 units you need to have completed as a prerequisite or visit http://schlprv.vcaa.vic.edu.au/schoolsstudiessearch/default.asp?class=vce
For pre-requisite requirements of the Physiotherapy course, please see http://www.monash.edu/study/coursefinder/course/3868/domestic-requirements.html
Is the Bachelor of Physiotherapy offered off-campus or via Distance Education? I currently live interstate.
The Bachelor of Physiotherapy is only offered on-campus (full time) at the Peninsula campus.
Can I start the Bachelor of Physiotherapy mid-year?
No, there is no mid-year intake into this course.
I am currently studying a degree at another University and I have a strong desire to study Physiotherapy at Monash University. Can I transfer into this degree?
Unfortunately, you cannot transfer into the Bachelor of Physiotherapy; you must apply through VTAC as a non-year 12 applicant.
Applications must be submitted to VTAC by the timely application date. As a non-current year 12 applicant you must meet the pre-requisite requirements (as outlined at http://www.med.monash.edu.au/physiotherapy/prerequisites.html) and your application will be assessed on your UMAT score, Interview and your entire academic record (GPA).
The UMAT is held once a year only, usually around mid year. The date and further information for the UMAT can be found at http://umatweb.acer.edu.au/. Results from the UMAT are valid for 1 year.
I have completed studies at another University and would now like to enrol in the Bachelor of Physiotherapy. Can I gain credit for the units I’ve already studied in my previous degree?
Due to the complex integrated nature of the course, recognition of prior learning/credit is not usually granted. Applications for Credit/Advance standing will only be considered once you are enrolled into the course. Applicants applying for Credit/Advance standing must clearly demonstrate to the selection committee that the content of their previous studies is at least equivalent to the Monash Bachelor of Physiotherapy course components for which they are seeking exemption.

I am currently studying a degree at Monash and would like to enrol into the Bachelor of Physiotherapy. Will you look only at my VCE results or also my current grades at University?
All applicants are required to sit the UMAT test. Your application will be assessed on your UMAT result, interview and your GPA. We recommend that you have a distinction average throughout your current degree.

I have not been accepted into the Physiotherapy course. What can I do to better my chances for next year?
Apply for a University course that you have an interest in, and perform as well as you can throughout your year of study. You will still need to apply through VTAC and still need to sit the UMAT like all other applicants.
What Postgraduate courses do you offer in Physiotherapy?
There are numerous Postgraduate research opportunities in our department. However, we do not offer any course work post graduate degrees at this time. Please see http://www.med.monash.edu.au/pgrad/
I am an overseas-trained Physiotherapist. Can Monash University help me attain Australian registration to practice?
Overseas trained physiotherapists can apply for registration in Australia through the Australian Physiotherapy Council (APC) procedures (www.physiocouncil.com.au).
After completing an online examination by APC, overseas trained physiotherapists must demonstrate competency in clinical areas.
Monash University offers one day workshops in areas examined in the APC registration exam for clinical practice to assist candidates prepare for these exams.
These workshops are scheduled to run in July - further detail will be available on our website http://www.med.monash.edu.au/physio/professionaldevelopment closer to the date.
I have completed a Bachelor of Physiotherapy at an overseas University and have worked as a Physiotherapist for several years. Can I apply to study only the Honours component of the Bachelor of Physiotherapy degree?
The Physiotherapy with Honours degree is complex because students study an extra Honours unit each semester on top of their undergraduate units starting from second year in order to complete their degree with an Honours qualification at the end of the 4 years. This is different to most other degrees where students study a normal load for 3 years, then study only Honours units in the final year.
It is not possible for you to join the Bachelor of Physiotherapy degree and only complete the Honours component, nor is it possible to simply study the Physiotherapy Honours degree.
However there are numerous Postgraduate research opportunities in our department. Please see http://www.med.monash.edu.au/pgrad/
