Centre for Women's Health Research Groups
The work undertaken by the Centre for Women's Health Research focuses on all aspects of women's health, with particular emphasis on pregnancy disorders, uterine fibroids, endometriosis, urogynaecology, ovarian cancer, contraception and infertility. Other major areas of effort include work on angiogenesis (the growth of new blood vessels), the effects of estrogen and progesterone on blood vessels, and novel surgical training methods. The ultimate aim is to reduce illness and improve quality of life of both mothers and babies.
The 36 clinical and basic science researchers at the Centre have wide-ranging expertise, including infertility diagnosis and treatment, all aspects of gynaecology and high-risk pregnancy management and obstetrics. When appropriate, the Centre works closely with staff at the Jean Hailes Foundation, which has major women's health programs in public and professional education, clinical care and clinical trials. The clinical focus of the Centre for Women's Health Research, coupled with links to organizations such as The Jean Hailes Foundation, places the Centre in a strong position to translate research findings into clinical practice and thus makes a real difference to the health of Australian women.
