A/Prof. Michael Hickey

NHMRC Senior Research Fellow

After completing his PhD at the University of Melbourne, Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology in 1996, Michael Hickey worked in the Immunology Research Group at the University of Calgary in Canada (1996-1999) and the Baker Heart Research Institute (2000-2001) as a Postdoctoral Fellow.  During this time he became an expert in the use of intravital microscopy to assess alterations in the microcirculation during inflammatory responses. 

In 2001, he established a laboratory in the Centre for Inflammatory Diseases at Monash University.  He received the International Institute of Microcirculation Award at the World Congress of Microcirculation in 2001, and in 2003 he received the John Casley-Smith Research Award for Scientific Excellence at the Australian & New Zealand Microcirculation Society’s 11th Symposium.  He was awarded a Senior Research Fellowship from the National Health & Medical Research Council in 2007.

A/Prof. Hickey has received research funding from the National Health & Medical Research Council, National Institutes of Health (US), and the Heart Foundation of Australia.
