Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) Review
Closing date for acceptance: 21st September 2009
Background
Effective use of Information and Communication Technologies is critical to the functioning of the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences, with particular challenges presented by the Faculty’s size, structure and dispersed geographical nature. In May 2008, a central University review of Shared Services indicated that better strategic ICT planning will reduce costs and provide benefit to staff and students. Likewise the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences wishes to review its ICT fundamentals in order to ensure optimal use of the available services and technologies.
Please refer to the ICT review web page for more background, including the complete terms of reference.
Purpose of the Review
This review will consider the opportunities and challenges facing the FMNHS at a strategic level. It will gather data regarding ICT within the Faculty; review this information; and make recommendations for change. A separate implementation phase will follow, which may appraise operations in finer detail, in order to fulfil the recommendations of the review panel.
The specific purposes of this review are:
- To consult with stakeholders regarding the successes of current Faculty ICT services; and what ICT barriers need to be overcome in order to optimise FMNHS’s teaching/learning, research and administration/management endeavours.
- To develop a strategic and coordinated approach to governing ICT and planning current and future ICT requirements that will guide the Faculty over the next five years.
Current status
Over 50 stakeholders have been consulted, including Heads of Schools, ICT; and a number of emerging issues have been identified. Thanks to those staff members who have already participated in interviews and focus groups, we really value your input.
Preliminary analysis has indicated senior staff across the Faculty have prioritised the following areas:
- Governance
- Improving the web
- Desktop or every day support issues
- Cross-site issues
- Research – managing, manipulating and storing data
- Dialogue or ‘engagement’
- Work practices enhancement
- Beyond desktop support
- Educational enhancement
- Infrastructure needs
- Linking with health services ICT
- Managing relationships within ICT services
- ICT support for new staff
Please refer to a brief Interim Report (pdf 186KB) for information regarding data collected to date.
Call for submissions
We would like to invite all interested stakeholders to provide a written submission to the ICT Review Panel, chaired by Professor Steve Wesselingh (Dean of the Faculty). Please note that a targeted survey released in early September will also provide an opportunity for a cross section of the faculty to provide their opinions regarding ICT; if you do receive one of these surveys, we would encourage you to complete it.
