Professor Elizabeth Blackburn is the recipient of the 2009 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for her work on telomeres, the structures located on - and protecting - the ends of chromosomes.
One of the most distinguished molecular biologists in the world, she completed much of her high school and early university studies in Melbourne.
Based at the University of California, San Francisco, Professor Blackburn is a Sir Louis Matheson Distinguished Visiting Professor at Monash University.
