The efficacy of extra-corporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) in the treatment of lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow): a randomised double-blind placebo-controlled trial.

A/Prof Rachelle Buchbinder, Dr Ronnie Ptasznik, Jeanine Gordon, A/Prof Andrew Forbes

The aim of this study is to evaluate the comparative efficacy of ultrasound-guided extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) and placebo in the treatment of lateral epicondylitis.  We will also determine whether duration of symptoms and identification of a lesion on ultrasound predicts outcome, and estimate and compare the cost-effectiveness of these treatment regimens.  Patients were assessed at 3 and 6 weeks (short-term), 3 and 6 months (intermediate-term) and one year (long-term) after entry into the study.  This data is currently being analysed ready for publication.
