Professor Edwina Cornish
Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research), Monash University
Edwina Cornish was appointed to the position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) at Monash University in February 2004. In August 2009 she was also appointed Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
She was previously Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) and concurrently Professor of Biotechnology at the University of Adelaide.
Professor Cornish has a BSc (Hons) in Biochemistry and a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Melbourne. She played a key role in building one of Australia's first biotechnology companies, Florigene Limited. Under her leadership the company established global R & D and marketing operations and successfully commercialised the world's first genetically modified flowers.
She has served on the Prime Minister's Science and Engineering Council, the Board of the Australian Research Council, the Victorian Government Science and Engineering Technology Taskforce, the South Australian Premier's Science and Research Council, the CRC Committee, the National Research Priorities Standing Committee, the CSIRO Flagship Cluster Committee, the National e-Research Coordinating Committee and was a participant in the Australia 2020 Summit. She is currently a member of the IP Australia's Advisory Council on Intellectual Property and one of two Australian Observers on the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) Council. She is the current chair of Universities Australia Deputy and Pro Vice-Chancellors (Research) Committee.
Professor Cornish is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering.
