The Central Clinical School (CCS) was founded in 2001 when the Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences restructured itself into 7 schools. As testament to the growth of our Faculty, a further restructure in 2008 created two more schools.
CCS coordinates the teaching of Monash’s MBBS students at teaching hospitals within Alfred Health and Cabrini Health Australia. It also teaches immunology to undergraduates in science and biomedical science.
The majority of the school’s teaching is conducted at The Alfred and Cabrini Hospitals.
The Alfred operates a unit in every specialist medical and surgical discipline, except Paediatrics and Obstetrics, and has major trauma, burns and heart & lung transplant departments.
CCS has a structured clinical teaching program that extends beyond Patient and Theme Based Learning with timetabled teaching in most specialist medical disciplines offered by the hospital. Emphasis is based on bedside skills as well as theoretical knowledge. An extensive lecture and tutorial program is given by senior clinicians. Access is available to the latest in research and development advances in medicine and a challenging and supportive learning environment is offered.
TheCentral Clinical School encourages multidisciplinary research across previously separate fields and attracts elite students, researchers and teachers to its modern research laboratories and facilities. It aims to incorporate its research products into clinical practice and aspires to join with commercial ventures and to contribute to the treatment and cure of several specific diseases.
Research is undertaken by the Departments of Medicine, Surgery, Immunology and Haematology and specialist centres such as the Van Cleef Centre for Nervous Diseases, the Centre for the Study of Ethics in Medicine & Society, and the Australian Centre for Blood Diseases
Many opportunities for PhD studies are always available. Check our Departmental web sites.
