Monash scientist finds key to overeating
A Monash scientist has discovered key appetite control cells in the human brain degenerate over time, causing increased hunger and potentially weight-gain as we grow older.

     
 

Alumni success at Beijing Olympics
Monash University congratulates Brenton Rickard (BSc 2006) and Travis Brooks OAM (BComp 2005) who contributed to Australia's medal count at the Olympics last month.

     
 

New program to study blood transfusions
Monash University will collaborate with the Red Cross to further understand the outcomes of one of the most common clinical practices - blood transfusions.

Pioneering heart and lung transplant surgeon Professor Sir Magdi Yacoub will present this year's Rod Andrew Oration at Federation Square on 28 October.

     
 

Monash event: Stem Cell Awareness Day
This world-first event aims to generate a greater understanding of stem cells. Featuring leading researchers and clinicians, this event will be held in Clayton on 25 September.

     
 

Oration: Victorian Institute of Forensic Medicine
Canadian judge The Honorable Stephen Goudge will discuss the outcomes of a recent inquiry into 'pediatric forensic pathology in Ontario' at Federation Square on 8 October.

On 9 October at The Langham Melbourne, Professor Bernadette McSherry will discuss the challenge to educate people about laws regulating the treatment of people with serious mental illnesses.

Jacinta Halloran (MBBS 1982, MPH 1991) is the author of a challenging new novel about the aftermath of medical litigation. She recently swapped writing prescriptions for prose, and found the voice and story of a doctor cut adrift.
